Pioneer & Riverside Cemetery Presentation

Pioneer & Riverside Cemetery Presentation

Discover the fascinating history of Appleton with the Appleton Historical Society and Appleton Public Library! Join us for engaging, monthly presentations where history comes alive – every 2nd Wednesday at 6:30 pm (no December meeting). Each session features a different speaker and topic, all dedicated to celebrating and exploring Appleton’s rich past. Best of all, it’s completely free and open to everyone – no membership required! Learn more about Appleton Historical Society at https://www.appletonhistory.com/.

This month’s presentation: Pioneer & Riverside Cemetery, 1850-2025

The Appleton Cemetery Association established Appleton’s first burial ground, known as Pioneer Cemetery, in 1850 on the northwest portion of what is now the Post-Crescent block — just south of the railroad tracks. It soon became clear that this downtown location was not ideal for a city cemetery and the hunt was on for a better location. The Appleton Cemetery Association chose the property where Riverside Cemetery is today for the new location and the first burial occurred in 1872. Discover the story behind Pioneer Cemetery and how it evolved into Riverside Cemetery.

Presented by Gwen Sargeant

Gwen Sargeant is an Appleton native, born and raised here. Gwen attended Lawrence University graduating in the sesquicentennial class. Gwen's family has been in Appleton since 1854. She runs the family business, Appleton Bicycle Shop, which has been in Appleton since 1939. Gwen and her husband Joe have 3 children. Gwen enjoys all things local history. She is currently the President of Appleton Historical Society and volunteers her time with Riverside Cemetery as well.

Appleton Flag Day Parade

The Appleton Flag Day Parade is an American tradition.

The annual event is always held on the second Saturday in June. Fox Cities citizens have honored “Old Glory” since 1950, making the Appleton Flag Day Parade the nation’s oldest. This celebration annually attracts hundreds of participants and more than 50,000 spectators to Appleton.

The Parade Grand Marshal is always the United States Flag. Each year, the Appleton Flag Day Parade also pays tribute to a branch of the military. The Parade begins at 2:00 PM at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and N. Oneida Street. The route travels west down W. Wisconsin Avenue to N. State Street, south on N. State Street to W. College Avenue. At W. College Avenue the parade travels east and ends at Drew Street. The Appleton Flag Day Parade has been broadcast on WFRV TV5 since 1989.

The event is organized by the Appleton Parade Committee, a group of dedicated community volunteers. Follow the Appleton Flag Day Parade on Facebook for news and updates on this year’s event.
